Five Dead After Japan Airlines Jet Collides with Coast Guard Plane

 

In a shocking incident at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, tragedy struck as a Japan Airlines (JAL) plane burst into flames on the runway after an apparent collision with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft. On Tuesday, a Japan Airlines plane, an Airbus A350, caught fire following a ground collision with a Japan Coast Guard plane. The JAL aircraft, arriving from New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, was carrying 367 passengers and 12 crew members. Fortunately, all on board managed to evacuate safely without any reported injuries.

Tragically, the coast guard plane, destined for Niigata Prefecture to deliver supplies for earthquake relief, was taxiing on the runway when the collision occurred. Out of the six occupants, five lost their lives, and the captain sustained severe injuries, according to NHK reports.


The Aftermath

The aftermath of the collision was captured in dramatic images, showing flames near the engines of the Japan Airlines plane. Despite the swift response of around 70 firefighting vehicles dispatched to the scene, the aircraft was engulfed in flames by 6:30 p.m., less than an hour after the incident occurred at 5:47 p.m.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism has initiated an investigation into the incident to determine the causes and contributing factors. Aviation experts, including Yoshitomo Aoki, a flight analyst, expressed the unprecedented nature of such a significant crash at a Japanese airport.


Airport Disruptions

In response to the incident, all runways at Haneda Airport were closed around 6 p.m. This led to the diversion of flights to other airports across the country, including Narita Airport, Chubu Centrair Airport, and Kansai Airport, causing disruptions during a peak travel period.
